EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN UNIVERSITY ÖZAY ORAL LIBRARY  51st LIBRARY WEEK ACTIVITIES (30.03.2015 – 05.04.2015)

 

Eastern Mediterranean University Özay Oral Library celebrated the 51st Library Week through various activities took place between 30 March and 5 April 2015.

On 30 March 2015, at  10:00 a.m., celebrations commenced with a mini concert taking place under the conductorship of Eastern Mediterranean University Fine Arts Education Department Music Teaching Program Chorus Conductor Erkan Dağlı. Following the concert, at 10:15 a.m. the opening of an exhibition entitled “Non-vanishing Values” organised in memory of late artist Ali Atakan, took place at the Library Exhibition Hall. In the same venue, a “Memory Corner” has been setup in memory of the famous Turkish writer Yaşar Kemal.

 

 

Exhibition organiser Leyla Çınar Algül stated that late artist Ali Atakan posed important contributions to culture and arts. Algül added that they are happy to open an exhibition in memory of Atakan. Following Algül’s address, students whose photos are exhibited at the event are presented certificates of appreciation by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Salih Katırcıoğlu.

 

 

The opening conference of the 51st Library Week of EMU Özay Oral Library, was delivered by EMU Education Faculty Acting Dean Prof. Dr. Ülker Vancı Osam. Entitled “The Place of Libraries in the World of Digital Locals”, the conference took place at EMU Library Auditorium at 10:30 a.m. The opening address of the conference was delivered by EMU Özay Oral Library Director Osman Soykan. At the end of the conference, Vice Rector for Promotion Prof. Dr. Hasan Amca presented a bouquet of flowers and a certificate of appreciation to Prof. Dr. Osam for her contributions to the event.

 

 

Within the framework of the week,  on 31 March 2015 at 10:30 a.m.,   a talk event on author Gürol Özkaya’s recent books entitled “Paphos and Things I Can Remember” and “Diagnosis” took place with the participation of the aforesaid author. During the talk, Özkaya  provided information about the books’ contents and, at the same time, shared his experiences on life with the participants.

 

On the other hand, on 1 April Wednesday, a book reading activity took place at EMU Library yard at 12:30 p.m. The event had the aim of  increasing the interest and awareness of public towards libraries as well as reading and developing a reading culture. Famagusta Mayor and President of the Board of Trustees İsmail Arter, EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Necdet Osam, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Salih Katırcıoğlu, Education Faculy Acting Dean Prof. Dr. Ülker Vancı Osam, Public Relations and Press Office Director Derviş Ekşici, academic and administrative staff and students took part in the activity taking place both in Turkey and the TRNC under the organisation of the Association for Turkish Librarians.

Addressing the participants of the silent reading activity, Arter stated that developments in technology affected the reading habits negatively and almost made it non-existent among the new generation. Arter added that reading books yield positive outcomes for each and every individual and, thus, it should be integrated into one's lifestyle as a habit. EMU Rector Prof. Dr. Osam added that books are our guides and the frequency of activities as such should be increased. Prof. Dr. Osam also expressed his pleasure in taking part in the silent reading activity and thanked Famagusta Mayor and President of the Board of Trustees İsmail Arter and EMU Özay Oral Library Director Osman Soykan. 

 

Within the framework of the 51st Library Week, on 1 April 2015, Director of TechKnowledge and Turnitin Representative of Turkey, Altan Gürsel delivered a seminar entitled “Turnitin: Plagiarism and Copying Analysis Program: Promotion and Training. The seminar took place at EMU Library Audio Visual Hall.

 

 

Within the framework of the 51st Library Week, at 10:30 am on 2 April 2015, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Sağsan the Chairman of Department of Innovation and Knowledge Management from Near East University, delivered a conference entitled  "The Passion of Librarians to Their Job; Librarianship" (Bilgi Mesleği Aşkı: Platonik bir İlişkinin Gelgitleri ve Profesyonellikler İmtihanı), the conference  took place at EMU Library Audio Visual Hall. The Conferences were held in  Turkish.

 

 

Rector’s Office has organized lunch in honour of the librarians.

 

On the other hand, on 2 April 2015 at 14:00 -16:00 pm, School of Computing and Technology lecturer Mr.Eralp Görkan delivered a conference entitled  “Information Technologies in the Libraries”. The conference  took place at EMU Library Audio Visual Hall.

 

 

Within the framework of the week, the university organised distribution of books as gifts to students; with the aim of supporting students’ academic and personal development. The event took place between 30 March to 3 April 2015 at the EMU Stadium.
